31 players returned today at the casino Sanremo to play down to the final table and chase their hopes of EPT glory. A whirlwind start was anticipated and indeed this proved the case as players fell thick and fast as the shortstacks all worked hard to gamble themselves back into contention. Lots of names fell during this period, perhaps the biggest of which was American Todd Brunson, falling just short.
With just over 200 players returning with hopes of a EUR 850,000 1st prize, hope were riding on just a few of the Brits, outnumbered by the vast hordes of Italians and French players. Antonio Estfandiari, the former WPT champion, was an early exit after he ran into the set of the rapidly improving young German Johannes Strassman. The Brits also faired badly, Marc Goodwin lost a coinflip, Josh Gould suffered a torrid time of outdraw after outdraw leaving a lot of the British hope on Roland De Wolfe. He too was outdrawn though, all in with Queens against Jacks only to be two outed on the river and in the end, the only Brit to make it into the money was veteran Paul Alterman.
The players penciled in to compete in the 2nd tranche convened today at the casino San Remo to continue the battle to crown the latest EPT Champion. Day 1a was choc a bloc full of famous names but Day 1b exceeded even that with star players such as Todd Brunson, Antonio Esfandiari and Daniel Negreanu making the trip over to Italy to chase the much coveted EPT title. These luminaries were joined by the usual throng of European and local players.
The penultimate EPT of the season was set in a tucked away corner of north west Italy on the cusp of the French Italian border. Despite it's slightly limited access from Nice Airport, (the closest one), the event is a complete sell out meaning the prize pool will be around 3.5 million Euros.
